The first portal for the new toll collection system – Crolibertas – has been installed

On the A3 highway, on the Popovača – Kutina section, the first portal for the new Crolibertas toll collection system was installed and equipped. The modular construction of three segments, with a total length of 33 meters and a weight of 10 tons, was erected in one piece. At the beginning of the week, cameras and antennas were mounted on the portal.

Work on the installation of the first seven portals on the section between Popovača and Novska began at the beginning of November, while work on the A4 Zagreb – Goričan highway begins this week.

The project includes the installation of 212 portals along the highway network, the installation of IT equipment, construction interventions under traffic and the establishment of systems in data processing centers. In parallel with the installation of the equipment, functionality tests of each segment will be carried out. Upon completion of the implementation, system testing will follow at the level of the entire network.

The new system is based on two technologies:

  • ALPR technology, which enables toll collection for users of light vehicles through automatic recognition of license plates and payment monitoring
  • to DSRC technology, which enables charging for users of ENC devices

The cash still remains

Although the public talked about the fact that the toll will no longer be able to be paid in cash, the HAC pointed out on this occasion that this is not entirely true. They say that the toll will be able to be paid in cash, but not in the current way, because there will no longer be the possibility for the user to pay the toll to the cashier at the highway exit. Instead, they will have to deposit cash into the account in advance.

Therefore, cash does not disappear – each user will be able to choose their own method of payment and registration in the system, including cash payment at the sales offices of HAC and concessionaires, as well as at other points of sale.

On this occasion, HAC also published a video with explanations of all the details of toll collection after the introduction of the new system, which we present below. The full implementation of the new non-stop charging system will most likely start from March 1, 2027.
