An electric car owner from the US has attracted a lot of attention on social media after he shared his experience with extremely high tire wear and how he turned it into a practically free replacement. Jason Brooks @jasonbrooks4 claims that the wear and tear warranty allowed him to get “new tires” practically for life.
Brooks drives a 2024 Kia EV6 GT, a powerful 576-horsepower electric model that accelerates to 100 km/h in about 3.2 seconds. The large mass of the vehicle and the instantaneous torque, typical of electric cars, significantly accelerate tire wear. In his case, the tires were practically worn out after about 16,000 kilometers traveled.
How the tire wear guarantee works
Researching the paperwork, Brooks discovered that the Toyo Celsius Sport tires have a 40,000-mile wear warranty. The key item states that if the tread depth drops to 2/32 inch before the end of the guaranteed mileage, the customer may be entitled to a free replacement, but only if certain criteria are met.
These conditions include regular tire rotation at recommended intervals, having maintenance documentation, even wear with no tread geometry issues, and the fact that the tires have not been used for racing or commercial purposes. Brooks states that he replaced the tires every 5,000 to 6,000 miles and keeps receipts.
Comments from employees in vulcanizing shops confirm that such guarantees exist, but warn that uneven wear or bad geometry can easily invalidate the right to a replacement, which is otherwise a common problem with electric vehicles.
While it remains to be seen whether Brooks will actually get a new set of tires at no extra charge, his story is a reminder to electric car drivers to check their warranty terms carefully. At a time when tires are often the fastest-wearing part of an EV, knowing the fine print can bring significant savings, reports Insideevs.
