The petrol Porsche Macan is going down in history

Porsche quietly confirmed, during the announcement of its sales results for the first half of the year, that the production of the Macan gasoline model will end at the end of this month. The last example will roll off the assembly line in Leipzig, marking the end of one of the company’s most popular and profitable models of the last decade. The decision comes as a surprise, given that the combustion engine version continues to outsell its electric successor, leaving Porsche without an equivalent petrol SUV in the key segment.

Unexpected ending despite excellent sales

When Porsche launched the all-electric Macan, the plan was that it would eventually completely take over the market from its gasoline predecessor. However, strong demand for classic engines has kept both versions on sale, giving buyers the choice between traditional drivetrains and waiting at the gas stations. Now, at least for this generation, the petrol version has come to an end.

Data for the first half of this year clearly show this market dynamic. Porsche sold a total of 35,315 Macans worldwide. Most of them, 19,695 to be exact, were models with an internal combustion engine, while the electric Macan found 15,620 customers. Overall Macan sales fell 22 percent compared to the same period last year, which Porsche blames on an exceptionally strong 2025 year, a lack of tax incentives for electric and hybrid vehicles in the US and slower-than-expected growth in electromobility. The decision to shut down production for global markets comes after the model was already withdrawn from Europe because it does not meet the new EU cyber security regulations (GSR2).

Admitting mistakes and challenges in 2026.

The timing of the shutdown of the best-selling model is not ideal. Total deliveries of Porsche fell by 16 percent in the first half of the year, from 146,391 to 112,306 vehicles. The decline is particularly dramatic in China, where sales fell by 32 percent, while North America saw a 13 percent drop. The Macan is not the only model facing problems. Sales of the Cayenne fell nine percent, the Panamera fell 38 percent, and the electric Taycan fell 25 percent.

The company’s management admitted that it had misjudged the market. The development of a new gasoline and hybrid SUV, which will be built on the Audi Q5 platform, has been confirmed, but is not expected before 2028. That leaves a gap of at least two years where dealers will have to rely on remaining stocks of petrol models, the electric Macan and the rest of the range. In order to bridge the gap in the US market, where the demand for gasoline remains high, Porsche has reportedly created enough stocks until 2027. The new model will also bear a different name, which means that the Macan label now belongs exclusively to the electric version.

The only bright spot for Porsche this year is the legendary 911. Its sales are up an impressive 19 percent, with 30,534 examples finding new owners. However, the success of one model cannot make up for the challenges the company faces on its path to electrification. Discontinuing the hugely popular petrol Macan without a ready successor is a big risk in a volatile market environment, and the coming years will be a key test of Porsche’s strategy and adaptability.
