VLC we’ve been using it for over two decades, but most still use it exactly the same way they did on day one. However, behind its simple and somewhat outdated interface hide powerful options. And it’s not about switching formats, streaming or screen recording – it’s about VLC add-ons.
Just like your Internet browser supports extensions, VLC allows the installation of third-party plugins that automate tedious tasks. In addition, they change the design and bring functions that raise the enjoyment of multimedia to a higher level.
How to find and install VLC plugins
There are two ways to install these mini-programs, depending on whether you use the store or the official online catalog.
1. Installation directly through the program
Go to option Tools > Plugins and extensionsand then click the button Find more addons online. On the left side, categories will appear through which you can search for add-ons for subtitles, managing playlists or changing the layout. When you find what you like, just click on Install.
2. Manual installation (for advanced options)
Since the built-in menu does not show all available options, a larger selection awaits you on the official website of the VLC catalog. Installation is easy:
- Download the desired plugin in the form .lua files.
- Copy that file and paste it to the following path on your computer:
C:\Users\[Vaše Korisničko Ime]\AppData\Roaming\vlc\lua\extensions
- Restart VLC. The new plugin will appear in the menu Extensionsand some of them also inside the card View.
As always, the quality of plugins may vary, as the authors are under no obligation to update them regularly. Before installation, be sure to read the description and user comments to see if the plugin works properly.
Safety and impact on work speed
The best thing about these supplements is that they are exceptional light ones. We’re talking about the files they take up less than one or two megabytes. This means that installing even a dozen add-ons will not slow down your computer in the slightest or load the VLC player.
If an add-on stops working or you no longer need it, you can safely remove it at any time. Give it back to me Tools > Plugins and extensions and click on delete option, advises MUO.
