Volvo has officially unveiled the EX60, its first all-electric mid-size SUV, targeting the largest segment of electric vehicles globally. The five-seat model is designed to eliminate “reach anxiety” (range anxiety), offering in its most powerful variant, the P12 AWD Electric, a range of up to 810 kilometers on a single charge – as recently announced. Thus, the EX60 surpasses all previous models of the company, as well as the competition in that class.
Seven variants
In addition to great autonomy, the EX60 also brings significant improvements in charging speed. Thanks to the support for fast chargers of 400 kW, up to 340 kilometers of range can be added to the vehicle in just ten minutes. The car will be available in seven different variants. Three different powertrains are available, which in addition to the aforementioned P12 includes the P10 AWD with a range of 660 km and the base model P6 with rear-wheel drive, which offers up to 620 kilometers of driving on a single charge. The factory warranty on the battery is 10 years.
The new model is based on the SPA3 architecture and uses HuginCore, a central system that manages all vehicle functions. The EX60 uses advanced production processes such as “mega casting” and “cell-to-body” technology, which, along with new electric motors of its own development, results in higher energy efficiency and reduced weight. Interestingly, the EX60, despite its dimensions, has a carbon footprint equal to that of the smaller EX30 model, making it one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles in the brand’s offering.
A smart assistant
Inside, the EX60 is the first Volvo vehicle to use Gemini, the new AI assistant from Google, which enables natural communication without the need for specific voice commands. The infotainment system promises the fastest response yet, with the integration of Dolby Atmos sound through a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, including speakers in the headrests. The cabin follows Scandinavian design principles, using natural materials with an emphasis on spaciousness and practical storage solutions.
The safety aspect, traditionally key for Volvo, has been raised to a new level by the use of sensors that analyze the vehicle’s environment in real time. The EX60 also introduces a world innovation – a multi-adaptive seat belt that offers personalized protection for passengers in the front row. The body is further reinforced with pine steel, forming a safety cage designed to meet standards that even exceed current regulatory requirements.
Production of the EX60 will begin this spring at a factory in Sweden. Orders are already open for European markets, while in the US they are expected in late spring. The first deliveries of the P6 and P10 variants are scheduled for the summer, while the most powerful model with the longest range, the P12, will follow soon after. Customers in Sweden also get three years of free home charging with their purchase, which is a very attractive benefit that will later be extended to other markets. The official announcement of prices for a particular market is still expected, and Volvo says that the starting price will probably be slightly higher than 50,000 euros.
Cross Country version
Simultaneously with the presentation of the EX60 model, Volvo also presented its Cross Country variant. The move marks the entry of the popular line of rugged models into a new, all-electric era. The EX60 Cross Country retains all the key advantages of the base model, but adds a specific visual identity and technical solutions adapted to more demanding surfaces and an adventurous lifestyle.
It is visually distinguished by exclusive rims, protective plates made of brushed stainless steel and more robust wheel arches. The key advantage of the EX60 Cross Country model is the elevated seating position, and the chassis has been raised by an additional 20 millimeters at the factory. An additional advantage is provided by the air suspension, which allows the driver to raise the car by another 20 millimeters if necessary, but can also lower the vehicle at higher speeds on the highway.
The EX60 Cross Country will be available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The first variant to hit the market is the P10 AWD Electric with an estimated range of up to 640 kilometers. Soon after it, the offer will be completed by the more powerful P12 AWD Electric version with even greater autonomy, which ensures that the off-road model also maintains its status as a leader in its class. Pre-orders for the Cross Country version are already open in selected European markets, while expansion to other regions is expected during the year.
