It has been around since 2014, and with the right settings, you can get the most out of everyday driving. However, one question is often asked: Does CarPlay use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to connect to the iPhone? The answer is – both.
In vehicles that support wireless CarPlay, the connection starts via a Bluetooth connection. It serves for initial recognition of the device, secure authentication and granting permission to connect. After that, the system automatically switches to Wi-Fi, which takes over data transmission and enables stable operation of applications while driving. At the same time, the mobile internet must remain on, because navigation, music streaming and other functions depend on the connection to the server.
Why cable CarPlay still has advantages
Some vehicles support both wireless and wired CarPlay, while others are limited to USB cable connectivity only. However, what happens to older cars from the first generations of the CarPlay system, when wireless connectivity was not available?
