Samsung planned a significant change to the S Pen technology on the future Galaxy S27 Ultra model, but that plan has since been stopped. According to the latest information from Korea, the company will keep the S Pen in the next generation, but without major innovations that were previously under consideration.
After the Galaxy S25 Ultra lost some of the Bluetooth functions of the S Pen, there were speculations that Samsung might abandon this accessory altogether. However, the Galaxy S26 Ultra confirmed the opposite, and company officials emphasized that the development of the S Pen technology is still ongoing.
The S Pen is still present on the Galaxy S27 Ultra, but without a redesign
According to a report from Korea’s ETNews, Samsung considered removing the digitizer layer in the screen responsible for the operation of the S Pen, in order to further reduce the thickness of the device. However, the market assessment showed that users do not attach excessive importance to extremely thin phones to the extent that it was previously expected.

Examples like the Galaxy S25 Edge and iPhone 17 Air models did not arouse significant interest, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra was already reduced to 7.9 mm, which was apparently considered sufficient. In addition, the decision to keep the digitizer is connected to the potential introduction of magnetic charging in the future.
In parallel, Samsung is developing a new “hybrid” technology that would combine the advantages of EMR and AES approaches, with the aim of enabling the pen to work without a digitizer and without a battery. However, this technology is not yet ready for commercial use and will not be part of the specifications of the Galaxy S27 Ultra model.
Therefore, the Galaxy S27 Ultra will follow the path of continuity when it comes to the S Pen, but without radical changes, while a bigger technological leap is expected in the next generations.
