Owners of some Porsches will be able to unlock the cars using Samsung mobile phones

Owners of the new Porsche Macan and the upcoming electric Cayenne will be able to unlock, lock and start their vehicles using only their Samsung Galaxy. As reported by Engadget, this functionality comes through the Digital Key feature within the Samsung Wallet application.

Integration relies on secure wireless UWB (Ultra-Wideband) or NFC connection, enabling direct communication between mobile phone and car. Users will be able to share the digital key with family members or friends, and in case of loss or theft of the mobile phone, the key can be remotely locked or completely erased, thus ensuring a high level of security. Support for digital keys starts in Europe already in December, followed by global expansion.

This feature will be available on most recent Samsung phones, including all models from the Galaxy S20 series, Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Flip 5G onwards. In doing so, Samsung joins Apple and Google, which already offer similar solutions for digital keys on their platforms.

It is worth reminding that this is not Samsung’s first foray into the world of cars. In early 2023, Digital Key support was added to selected Volvo and Polestar electric models.
