ChatGPT is coming to CarPlay with iOS 26.4

With the release of iOS 26.4 last week, Apple enabled support for voice AI applications within CarPlay for the first time. Just a few days later, OpenAI updated the ChatGPT application, which is now also available through a special version for CarPlay.

As 9to5Mac reports, the CarPlay version of ChatGPT relies entirely on voice interaction and does not display text. Users communicate with it exclusively by voice, similar to voice mode on the iPhone. Only buttons for ending the conversation and for turning on/off the microphone are available on the screen.

Apple continues to tightly control the types of apps that are allowed in CarPlay, primarily for security reasons. Applications must be built according to predefined templates, and the new category of voice conversational applications further emphasizes the focus on minimal distractions while driving.

Accordingly, Apple’s guidelines dictate that such applications must have voice as the primary mode of interaction and avoid displaying text and visual elements in responses.
