Super steel is more durable, stronger, does not rust and is more flexible

Researchers have developed a new type of steel optimized for 3D printing, which combines exceptional strength, corrosion resistance and improved flexibility. This so-called supersteel could significantly improve industrial productionincluding the production of technological and other devices.

According to the portal report Popular Mechanicsthe new material was developed with the help of a machine learning model that analyzes key physicochemical properties of metals, such as atomic structure and electron behavior. The goal was to obtain an alloy adapted to the specific conditions of 3D printing, where rapid heating and cooling of the material occurs.

Traditional metals used in production are often not optimized for this process, which can lead to defects in the structure. The new approach enables more precise design of materials that better withstand these conditions.

What does supersteel offer?

The result is an alloy that achieves a strength of about 1,713 MPa, while maintaining an elasticity of about 15 percent. This represents a significant improvement over standard 3D printed metals. In other words, this material can withstand enormous pressure before it breaks. More precisely, about 1,700 megapascals, which is many times more than the steel used in everyday industry. In comparison, steel in construction usually has a strength of 250 to 400 MPa, which means that this alloy is several times stronger.

At the same time, elasticity of about 15 percent means that the material can deform – bend or “stretch” – before cracking, instead of immediately giving way under load. In practice, this means that this steel is not only extremely strong, but also “tough”. It can absorb shock and stress without immediate breakage, which is crucial for applications in various industries.

In addition, the material shows high resistance to corrosion, with significantly slower deterioration compared to classic stainless steels. A key part of the process includes additional heat treatment during which nanoparticles are formed that further strengthen the structure of the material and improve its properties.

Such a development could have a great impact on all industries, where the durability and longevity of materials are of key importance. Also, 3D printing enables the production of complex parts that would be difficult or expensive to manufacture using traditional methods.

The new method represents a step towards more efficient and reliable production of metal components.
