Is installing gas in a car worth it today?

In the wake of constant changes in fuel prices, where even the smallest correction at gas stations affects household budgets, many drivers are reconsidering alternative solutions. One of them, although present for decades, is still relevant – autogas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Despite the fact that in Croatia, gas-powered vehicles make up only about three percent of the total vehicle fleet, the financial calculation for many drivers who cover a large number of kilometers still speaks in favor of this proven technology. But what do you need to know before you decide on such an investment?

Installation price and investment return

The key question is always financial. The price of installing a gas installation in Croatia ranges from about 700 euros upwards for cars with four-cylinder engines, which make up the vast majority of vehicles on our roads. For engines with multiple cylinders or those with modern direct injection systems (such as FSI, TSI or GDI engines), the price can be twice as high, rising to more than 1,400 euros.

However, the initial cost should be seen as an investment. The current price of autogas in Croatia is around one euro per liter, while gasoline is around 1.60 to 1.70 euros, so the savings are still very concrete. Although a gas-powered car uses approximately 15 to 20 percent more fuel per kilometer due to its lower energy value, the final cost per kilometer traveled is on average about 25 to 35 percent lower. A simple calculation shows that an investment of about 700 euros in a gas installation, at today’s prices, pays off after approximately 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers. For drivers who drive more than 15,000 kilometers per year, the return on investment is realized within one to two years, after which each drive brings additional savings.

Effect on engine, maintenance and performance

One of the most common misconceptions related to autogas is a significant loss of engine power. While older, so-called vacuum systems, could cause a power drop of up to ten percent, modern sequential gas injection systems have reduced that loss to a negligible level, often less than two percent, which is practically imperceptible when driving. Moreover, driving on gas can also have a positive effect on the longevity of the engine. Engine operation is quieter and calmer, and cleaner gas combustion extends the service life of engine oil, catalyst and lambda sensor. Some sources state that engine life can be extended by up to 35 percent.

Of course, the gas system requires regular maintenance. The service interval is prescribed every 15,000 kilometers or once a year, and includes an inspection of the system and replacement of gas and liquid phase filters. The price of such a regular service ranges between 40 and 70 euros. This ensures the correct and safe operation of the entire system, and the cost itself is insignificant compared to fuel savings.

Security, certification and additional costs

Modern gas installations are extremely safe and meet strict European standards. Gas tanks are made of thick steel sheet and tested to pressures many times higher than working pressures. They are also equipped with a multivalve that prevents filling above 80 percent capacity, leaving room for gas expansion due to temperature changes. In the event of a fire, safety valves release the gas in a controlled manner to prevent an explosion. It is interesting that the ignition temperature of gas is significantly higher than that of gasoline, which further increases safety.

After installation, the vehicle must undergo an attestation procedure, i.e. testing at an authorized technical inspection station, which costs around 140 euros. The container itself has a shelf life of ten years, after which a pressure test can be done and its shelf life can be extended for an additional five years. When registering a vehicle, owners also pay an additional annual fee, which currently amounts to around 73 euros. This amount compensates for the excise tax, which is not included in the price of autogas, unlike gasoline and diesel. In turn, gas-powered vehicles are exempt from the ECO test at the technical inspection.

The installation of a gas installation is therefore not a solution for everyone, but primarily for those who travel a significant number of kilometers. It’s a decision that requires an initial investment and regular maintenance, but one that pays off many times over in the long run through significantly lower fuel costs, with minimal impact on performance and a positive effect on engine longevity.
