The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 and GLS 63 arrive with a V8 engine under the hood

Just a few months after Mercedes presented the redesigned GLE and GLE Coupe models, as well as the new GLS, their most brutal performances are on the scene. From Affalterbach comes the refreshed Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and GLS 63, a duo that combines raw power, top performance and uncompromising luxury in a way only AMG knows how. Although prices have not yet been announced, it is clear that these beasts bring significant technological improvements, primarily under the hood.

M177 EVO with straight crank

The main star of both models is the new Mercedes M177 EVO engine. It is a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that recently debuted in the S-Class, and is now finding its way to the most powerful SUVs. The key innovation is the installation of a flat crankshaft (flat-plane crankshaft), a technology that until now was reserved almost exclusively for purebred sports cars. Although power remains unchanged at an impressive 603 horsepower, the new engine design ensures faster throttle response and greater efficiency. With this move, AMG not only improves performance, but also secures the future of the V8 engine in an era of increasingly strict environmental standards.

The maximum torque is 850 Nm and is available in a wide range from 2,500 to 4,500 revolutions per minute. In addition to the powerful V8 engine, there is also a 48-volt mild hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator. This system delivers an additional 23 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque when needed, helping with acceleration and reducing so-called turbo lag. Power is sent to all wheels via the latest nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT transmission and 4Matic+ drivetrain with fully variable torque distribution, which guarantees optimal traction in all conditions.

Performance

When all this technology comes together, the results are great. The smaller and more agile Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S, available in SUV and Coupe versions, accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Its bigger brother, the GLS 63, accomplishes the same task in a slightly slower but still lightning-fast 3.9 seconds. The maximum speed for both models is electronically limited to 280 km/h.

But power without control doesn’t mean much. That’s why both SUVs are equipped with AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive dampers and several operating modes. Interesting is the Trail mode, which raises the body by 5.5 centimeters, making the vehicle more capable of off-road driving, although few owners will get off the asphalt with these gems. In sport modes (Sport and Sport+), as well as in Comfort mode, the height is lowered by one centimeter to improve aerodynamics and stability at higher speeds. The AMG Active Ride Control system takes care of minimal body roll when cornering, while the electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential ensures that power is always transferred to the wheel with the best grip.

Design

The visual changes are subtle but effective. The GLE models got a new front fascia and redesigned air intakes in black for a more aggressive look, while the GLS sticks to a more traditional chrome grille. Both models come with distinctive rims, sizes up to 22 inches for the GLE and even 23 inches for the GLS. Of course, there are also four exhaust pipes, a trademark of every true AMG model.

The interior has also been refreshed. The latest generation AMG Performance steering wheel dominates, available in leather, microfiber or a combination of both materials. Exclusive upholstery options are also available to customers, as well as an abundance of decorative elements made of carbon fiber, which further emphasize the sporty character of the cabin.
