During the National Round Table on the Automotive Industry, organized by the Italian Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Production, the Stellantis concern officially presented the first image of the new Alfa Romeo compact SUV. Chief Operating Officer of Stellantis for wider Europe, Emanuele Cappellanohas only revealed a detail of the rear design of the upcoming model, which will replace the current Tonale model.
A new phase for Alfa Romeo
This launch marks the beginning of a new phase for the Italian manufacturer in the heart of the European C-segment. The first official image shows the car’s rear flank with a new, sharper taillight design and a sculpted fender. The lines shown suggest a much more dynamic design with a flatter roofline, more like a coupé model, compared to the more upright silhouette of the current Tonale.
The new model, which has not yet been officially named, was designed at Alfa Romeo’s Centro Stile design center in Turin and will be produced at the Melfi plant in Italy. The new C-SUV will be based on the modern STLA Medium platform of the Stellantis concern, and not on the STLA One architecture that is intended for the future spiritual successor hatchback model Giulietta. It is an adaptable platform that supports different forms of drives.
According to the FaSTLAne 2030 plan, which Stellantis announced in May 2026, the new model will be available with several types of powertrains. Customers will be offered versions with internal combustion engines and fully electric powertrains. Models with internal combustion engines will most likely use advanced versions of the mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid drive systems that are currently installed in other models from the Stellantis range.
This model, along with the aforementioned C-segment hatchback, will form the basis of the Italian brand’s offer as part of its efforts to regain a stronger position in the mass market. The official presentation of the new car is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027. First deliveries to customers and arrival on the market are expected at the beginning of 2028, when the new C-SUV will formally succeed the current Tonale model.
