Epic Games Store has shared the details of their business in 2025 and their results aren’t exactly great, at least compared to the previous year.
It’s common knowledge that the Epic Games Store doesn’t make nearly as much money as Steam, and now we have a concrete comparison.
Namely, the Epic Games Store revealed that in 2025, PC gamers spent a total of 1.16 billion dollars. For comparison, Valve earned $1.6 billion in the 12th month of last year alone.
The calculation looks even worse for Epic with the fact that only $400 million was spent on buying games and add-ons / microtransactions for non-Epic games. In translation, the majority of the revenue was generated through Fortnite and Rocket League.
In fact, the most successful games on Epic are respectively free-to-play titles that are not normally available on Steam: Wuthering Waves, Honkai Star Rail, Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero. If we assume that of the 400 million dollars spent, a good part went to microtransactions, we can come to the conclusion that a very miserable amount of games are sold on Epic.
Or, Epic Games is 2025. gave away straight 100 games for free – surely that also attracted people? Yes, Epic announced that the free games they shared were activated 662 million times. Each player on Epic is said to have received $2316 worth of games.
However… the total number of hours spent playing on EGS is down by -14% vs. 2024. It means that people are playing less and less games that Epic gives away for free.
After all, Epic decided to come up with a new motivation for users. All those who purchase any game on Epic will receive the corresponding cosmetic items in Fortnite in the future.
As for exclusive games, that plan almost failed for Epic – they only have a few exclusive games planned in the future (Infinitesimals, Out of Words).
