Formula E is getting closer to Formula 1: an ever bigger calendar, faster cars and sprint races are coming

The Governing Council of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has confirmed the provisional calendar for the 2026/2027 season. ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which brings so far the most extensive program in the history of this competition. The new season officially marks the beginning of the long-awaited era of fourth-generation cars, and will include a record 21 races spread over 13 world cities.

The significant increase in power and speed of the new electric single-seaters also caused a natural shift towards established, permanent racetracks, although the series retains its recognizable roots in city centers. Among the key novelties in the calendar, the races on the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) track in the US Austin, the Dutch Zandvoort and the relocation of the British E-Prix to the iconic Brands Hatch track in London stand out.

GEN4 era

The new generation of cars, GEN4, as we have already written, brings radical technological changes and even 600 kW of power (over 815 HP) from the electric motor. The vehicles will have active four-wheel drive in all phases of the race, an active differential, a dual aerodynamic configuration and a powerful regenerative braking system. In addition to high performance, the GEN4 also sets new sustainability standards as the most environmentally responsible racing car, made from 100% recyclable or reusable materials in all segments of the supply chain.

Together with the new technology, Formula E also introduces an additional format of competition for weekends in which double races are run. Along with the classic E-Prix, which lasts 45 minutes with aerodynamic settings of low thrust, eight minutes of so-called “Attack Mode” and a mandatory pit stop, a shorter format called “E-PrixUnleashed” is being introduced. That shorter race will last 30 minutes in a sprint format with high aerodynamic thrust. In doing so, the drivers will have six minutes of “Attack Mode” at their disposal, but without the mandatory pit stop. The goal of that format will be to show the full, unrestricted performance of the GEN4 car.

World tour

The championship begins with a double night program in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on December 18 and 19, 2026. After that, the caravan moves to the American continent, where it will drive in Mexico City on January 16, 2027, then in Austin on February 6, and in Miami on February 20 on the track around the Hard Rock Stadium. The American tour ends in São Paulo on March 13, before the competition moves to Asia’s Sanya on April 17.

The European part of the season brings an intense series of double races, starting with Berlin on May 8 and 9, followed by Monaco in mid-May and London at the end of that month. June is reserved for races in Zandvoort and Madrid. The grand finale of the championship will take place in the Asia-Pacific region with a double program in Shanghai on July 10 and 11, while the final denouement of the first season of the GEN4 era will be run on the street circuit in Tokyo on July 24 and 25, 2027. When creating this schedule, the organizers grouped the races by continent in order to reduce freight mileage and accompanying carbon dioxide emissions.
