Microsoft has officially started the transition with Remote Desktop applications to a new solution called “Windows App“, ending an era of remote computer access.
Support for the classic Remote Desktop client has already been discontinued at the end of March 2026, while certain cloud service users will have an extended deadline until September. After that, the only option will be the Windows App, which unites all access methods: from local computers to cloud solutions.
Windows App provides a unique but confusing solution
The new application allows connecting to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop or a physical computer, all through a single interface. The goal is to eliminate the previous fragmentation, where users had to use multiple versions of Remote Desktop client applications depending on the scenario.
The Windows App also brings a number of improvements, including better connection stability, real-time diagnostics, support for split screen in the web version, as well as direct file transfer via the clipboard. Integration with the Start menu and Spotlight search further simplifies access to remote resources.
However, the biggest problem is the name. The name “Windows App” seems too generic and can make it difficult to search and recognize among users, which has already caused some criticism.
Microsoft advises users to start the migration as soon as possible, while the company works in parallel to ensure that the Windows App reaches the full functionality of the old Remote Desktop client, reports Windows Central.
