Samsung presented a phone with a sliding screen

The company Samsung presented a new concept of a smartphone with a sliding screen that physically stretches to offer the user a larger area for displaying content. It is a prototype that was shown at the MWC 2026 fair in Barcelona.

Unlike flip phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, the new concept uses a sliding mechanism that pulls the screen out towards the top. When the user pulls the top part of the device, an additional part of the OLED panel is pulled out from inside the phone and increases the total screen area.

The concept is called Samsung OLED Mobile Slidable and is currently still in the development phase. Although it is not known when this technology could reach commercial devices, Samsung has already presented the basic technical characteristics of the screen.

The panel when closed has a diagonal of 5.1 inches and an aspect ratio of 16:9. When the screen is fully extended, the diagonal increases to 6.7 inches with a more elongated 22:9 aspect ratio. The screen resolution is 1080 × 2640 pixels (FHD+), while the display density reaches 426 pixels per inch.

The additional part of the screen is pulled out by a little less than five centimeters, and the OLED panel literally unrolls from the inside of the device when expanding. When the phone is turned to a horizontal position, the user gets a much wider screen suitable for watching videos or working with more content.

Samsung has demonstrated similar technologies before. Back in 2022, the company showed a prototype called Flex Slidable that allowed the screen to be pulled out from both the top and bottom of the device at the push of a button.

However, such concepts often serve as demonstrations of technological capabilities and may not necessarily reach the market. With such projects, Samsung shows the direction of development of future smartphones that could combine flexible and sliding screens, reports Android Authority.
