Samsung is developing a phone with a rollable screen

Company Samsung is planning a new step in the development of mobile devices. After bendable models, this company is developing a phone with a rollable screen.

South Korean media Money Today states that Samsung Display is in talks to supply panels for a new device from Samsung Electronics. Details about the phone itself are currently very scarce, but market research company Omdia predicts that this model could be called the Z Slide.

According to these estimates, the device will have a 10-inch diagonal screen, and the display should use a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display density will be 440 pixels per inch. Money Today states that the phone could be launched in the first half of 2028, and the company is reportedly already planning a successor to this model. Its appearance on the market is expected during 2030.

History of the concept and earlier attempts

Roll-up screen concepts have already been seen in the industry. LG was close to launching a similar model in 2021. That project was cut short because that company shut down its mobile phone division, and as a result the device never made it to market.

Samsung Display has previously shown various prototypes of bendable and stretchable screens. Among them is a technology called Rollable Flexbut most of these solutions have not yet been applied to over-the-counter phones.

Development of new mobile phone designs

Samsung regularly changes the formats of its devices. In addition to models from the Z Fold and Z Flip series, Samsung also presented a phone with a triple folding screen. The development of roll-up screens is a continuation of the current practice in creating new formats on the market.
