The radical BMW Vision K18 is a fusion of Concorde and Formula 1 on two wheels

The BMW Motorrad company chose the exclusive setting of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event on Italy’s Lake Como as the place for the first public presentation of their new visionary concept. Their new Vision K18 is designed as a unique motorcycle that combines uncompromising passion, high performance for long distances and a strong visual presence. According to the manufacturer, this model redefines long-distance travel by turning it into a sensory experience.

Inspired by fast airplanes

The heart and starting point of the entire concept is a traditional in-line six-cylinder engine with a volume of 1,800 cubic centimeters. Although current BMW models with this engine are positioned in the comfort-oriented touring segment, the Vision K18 positions the power unit as a fully visible design feature. The proportions of the motorcycle are subordinated to the engine, and the elongated silhouette and its line are directly inspired by high-speed aircraft such as Concorde, which gives the vehicle a dynamic appearance even at rest.

The design language of the motorcycle combines sculptural, elongated shapes with technical components that deliberately interrupt the smooth surfaces of the bodywork. The architecture of the six-cylinder engine is visually emphasized through six intakes, six exhaust pipes and six LED lights. The special feature of this visionary model is the hand-shaped parts of the body, as well as the hydraulic lowering suspension, which further highlights the exclusive character of the motorcycle.

Radical unique

The construction of the vehicle, as a combination of traditional handwork and high technology, is reflected in the aluminum body with a more than two meter long side panel made without seams. Contrasting materials such as aluminum and forged carbon fibers are used, while the surfaces, with their metallic appearance, are reminiscent of the exhaust branches of classic Formula 1 cars. The engineering character is further emphasized by the actively cooled front light and striking intake system.

Radical proportions were achieved by swapping the air filter housing (airbox) and fuel tank, which enabled an extremely straight rear line of the motorcycle. In contrast, the rear part of the vehicle is made very wide and is framed by carbon fiber in which six exhaust pipes are placed. The front end of the motorcycle also communicates power through an intake system where air is routed through six pipes directly to the central air filter.

The entire concept exists only in one copy and will remain so, but the company says that it serves as an inspiration for future serial solutions.
