John Romero’s canceled game has been saved, only now there is no connection with John Romero’s canceled game

Well-known game designer John Romero announced that his canceled game still survived and that about a hundred people are currently working on completing it.

Five months ago, we learned that the Irish studio Romero Games had a deal with the publishing house Bethesda, which was supposed to finance the development of a first-person shooter. At the time it sounded like the whole project had failed and the studio had to close because of it. However, recently John Romero himself revealed that the game was ultimately saved… somewhat.

Namely, Romero Games still exists, and is still developing a first-person shooter in Unreal Engine 5. However, it is not the same game they have been working on since 2022.

Romero says it’s their new game borrowed a lot of elements from the one they canceled, but that the design is a completely different thing. It’s also a significantly smaller game than the canceled one, but it’s more fun and different than anything we have on the market today.

Romero compares playing that game with the experience of playing Elden Ring for the first time.

“The things you do in the game will be a new experience for people, just like the Elden Ring was a new experience. It was a crazy place and a different world that was cool to explore. That’s the idea behind what we’re preparing for our new game.” Romero said.
