Modern cars are sophisticated machines whose operation is almost silent, so any deviation from the usual soundscape should be taken seriously. Ignoring these sounds, such as unusual squeaks, hums or knocks, can lead to much bigger and more expensive problems.
Squeaking as a warning sign
High-frequency screeching is one of the most common sounds that drivers encounter, and its causes can be varied. Most often, this sound comes from the brake system. Brake pad manufacturers install metal wear indicators that, when the pads are worn, come into contact with the disc and create a piercing sound. That’s a clear signal that it’s time for a replacement. If this warning is ignored, complete destruction of the pads and metal scraping of the disc can occur, leading to a much more expensive repair and, most importantly, reduced braking power.
However, screeching does not always have to come from the brakes. It can also be related to a worn or loose V-belt in the engine area, which slips and creates a characteristic sound. Also, problems with the suspension system, such as worn rubbers or dry joints, can cause screeching, especially when going over bumps or when turning. Although replacing the pads is not overly expensive, suspension problems require a timely response to ensure driving comfort and safety.
A buzz that should not be ignored
A buzzing or buzzing sound that increases with increasing speed is often a very worrying symptom. In a large number of cases, the cause is a damaged or worn wheel bearing. This sound can change in intensity when turning, depending on which bearing is loaded. A problem with a wheel bearing is considered a very serious failure and requires an immediate trip to a mechanic, because in the worst case it can lead to a wheel lock and a serious traffic accident.
Buzzing can also be related to tires, either due to improper pressure, uneven wear or damage. Sometimes, the cause can be less dangerous, such as loose parts of the exhaust system or even poorly attached plastic interior trim that resonates at certain speeds. Regular vehicle maintenance is key to preventing these types of problems. Regardless of the cause, any hum that increases with speed should be thoroughly investigated.
Knocking as an alarm signal
Knocking or knocking, especially that coming from the engine compartment, is probably the most dangerous sound you can hear. It often indicates serious internal problems with the engine. One of the most common causes is damaged crankshaft or piston bearings, known as flying bearings. This failure requires an immediate shutdown of the vehicle and transportation to a service center, as continuing to drive could lead to catastrophic engine damage. Repair of the engine block in such cases can exceed five thousand euros.
Knocking can also be caused by low oil, low octane fuel that causes knocking, or valve problems. On the other hand, if a knocking sound is heard when going over bumps, it is probably a suspension problem, such as worn bushings, stabilizer links, or shock absorbers. Although a suspension problem is less dramatic than an engine failure, it also needs to be addressed as soon as possible to avoid further costs and preserve the vehicle’s drivability.
