The FIA presented the regulatory framework and visual concept of the WRC car for 2027

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has officially, as in the case of Formula 1 recently, presented the visual concept and technical framework that will form the basis of the World Rally Championship from 2027. The WRC27 rules, approved by the World Motor Sport Council as early as 2024, are the result of extensive consultation with all those involved in the organization and implementation of the championship. The main goals of the new era are to increase accessibility to the elite level of rallying, greater flexibility for manufacturers and stricter cost control, but while maintaining the performance and spectacle that are the hallmark of this sport – one stage of which will take place again in our country from next year.

Flexible design

At the very heart of the new rally car concept is an improved tubular safety cage, developed on the basis of the structure introduced in 2022. Through extensive simulations and crash tests, the FIA has developed a cell that provides a high level of crew protection while reducing manufacturing complexity and cost. The new design significantly improves energy absorption in cases of frontal, side and rear impacts, as well as in rollovers on the roof.

Unlike the previous rules, which required strict derivation from production models, WRC27 introduces the concept of “reference volume”. Constructors will have the freedom within the given dimensions (minimum length 4,100 mm and width up to 1,875 mm) to develop different designs, from those based on road cars to fully dedicated rally concepts. Aerodynamic additions will be simplified to reduce development costs and technical complexity, thus opening up space for a wider range of competing teams.

The new rules redefine the term “builder”, which now includes OEMs and specialist manufacturers tuners. The entity that designs and constructs the car, presents it for homologation and markets it, will be considered the constructor. With this move, the FIA aims to strengthen competition at the highest level, allowing more players to participate equally in the elite rally category.

Better performance, lower costs

Powering the WRC27 rules car will be a 1.6-litre turbocharged internal combustion engine developing around 290bhp, with four-wheel drive and a five-speed gearbox. Although the initial focus will be on sustainable fuels, the platform is designed to accept alternative propulsion systems in the future. This configuration aims to reduce the difference in performance between the first and second class of competition, making it easier for young drivers to transition to the top tier.

One of the most significant developments is the drastic reduction in the price of the competition. The price of the race-ready car in asphalt specification will be capped at 345,000 euros, a reduction of over 50% compared to the current state. In addition to the price, the regulation also aims to reduce operational costs by limiting the number of support staff, reducing logistical requirements and increasing the use of local resources during the competition.
