A Chinese photographer has shared a series of macro photos of snowflakes photographed using the 10x telephoto camera on the Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max phone, along with a detailed explanation of how to achieve this effect. The announcement was also conveyed by the executive director of the Huawei Terminal BG department, who said that the guide is extremely practical and worth trying during snowy winter days.
The sharp corners and rich texture of the snowflakes are clearly visible in the photos, with the hexagonal structure of the tiny veined ice crystals captured in full brilliance and incredible detail. The transparent, almost glassy appearance gives the impression of a microscopic effect, which surprised many with comments that this level of detail was unimaginable on mobile phones until now.
Twin periscope telephoto and tips for shooting snow
Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max brings a periscope system with two telephoto modules for the first time. These are a 50 MP 4× optical macro telephoto sensor and a 50 MP 6.2× optical super-telephoto sensor, with support for 12.4× optical zoom. It is this combination that makes it possible to record extremely small details from a greater distance.

The photo author lists five key steps to successfully photographing snowflakes with a mobile phone:
- The first step is to choose the appropriate zoom, with 3x, 5x or even 10x telephoto mode recommended for maximum sharpness.
- Then follows manual focusing on the snowflake itself and slightly reducing the exposure in order to avoid burn-out of white surfaces and highlight details.
- The stability of the phone is of crucial importance, so it is recommended to rest your hand on a firm surface or use a small tripod.
- It’s also important to choose a darker background, such as clothing, branches or window frames, as the contrast greatly helps the hexagonal shapes to be seen more clearly.
- Finally, the moment of release is also crucial, the best results are obtained by catching the snowflake at the moment when it has just fallen and kept its proper shape.
This example clearly shows how much mobile cameras, especially telephoto systems, have advanced and how much the border between mobile and classic macro photography is increasingly being erased, reports mydrivers.
