A young Italian phenomenon Kimi Antonelli continues his dominance in the 2026 season. The Mercedes driver took his third consecutive win, celebrating at a chaotic Miami Grand Prix to further consolidate his lead in the overall standings. Although he started the race from the best starting position, the road to victory was anything but simple. They passed behind him Lando Norris i Oscar Piastri in the McLarens, confirming the great form of the British team.
The race on the track around the Hard Rock Stadium offered plenty of excitement right from the start. Already in the first turn, chaos arose when the leading Antonelli and Max Verstappen from Red Bull blocked the wheels when braking. Verstappen did a 360-degree turn in the crowd and fell to the back of the order, but miraculously avoided major damage and was able to continue. He made the best of the initial confusion Charles Leclercwho took the lead.
Safety car and strategic battle
The early stage of the race brought more drama. It’s the first Isack Hadjar from Red Bull ended up in the wall, and just a few moments later there was a heavy collision between them Pierre Gasly i Liam Lawson. Gasly’s Alpine overturned after the contact, which immediately brought the safety car onto the track. Fortunately, the French driver got out of the wrecked car unharmed. In addition to the aforementioned three, the race ended early due to technical problems Nico Hulkenberg, so the Grand Prix of Miami was already without four drivers in the first few laps.
The teams used the safety car period for their first trips to the pits, and strategy played a key role here. Although the winner of Saturday’s sprint race, Lando Norris, took the lead at one point, the Mercedes team, with great tactics and an earlier entry into the pits, enabled Antonelli to overtake his rival from McLaren. During the entire race, there was also the threat of rain, which added to the tension, but in the end, the heavier downpour still bypassed the track.
In the second part of the race, Antonelli controlled the events from the leading position. Despite pressure from Lando Norris and a brief concern over a possible gearbox problem, the 19-year-old Italian calmly brought the race to a close. With this victory, he also wrote Formula 1 history, becoming the first driver to turn his first three pole positions into victories. The drama continued until the very end in the battle for the podium. Charles Leclerc spun in the penultimate lap and hit the wall, which cost him the fight for third place. His misfortune was taken advantage of by George Russell in the second Mercedes and Max Verstappen, who managed to work his way up to fifth place.
With this victory, Antonelli increased his lead in the driver’s standings to 20 points ahead of his teammate Russell, while Mercedes leads convincingly in the constructors’ standings. The season continues in three weeks with the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
