Huawei car headlights become an outdoor cinema

Huawei has introduced a new generation of smart car headlights called Huawei XPixel, which practically turns the car into a mobile projector and multimedia system.

The new technology was shown during the car show in Beijing together with the Huawei Qiankun platform, and the main difference compared to previous smart headlight systems is the full RGB color display.

While the previous generations of intelligent headlights from companies like Mercedes-Benz mainly served to project traffic signs and assist driving, Huawei is now going much further. The XPixel system can project movies, sports broadcasts, video content, animations, navigation arrows and even games directly in front of the car onto a wall or other surface.

Huawei headlights now show movies and games

Huawei claims that the system can display an image about 100 inches in size with very high sharpness thanks to high-resolution LED modules with individual pixel control. During the demonstrations, football matches were shown, navigation projected directly onto the road, as well as various lighting effects around the car.

The system is not just for fun. Huawei says the XPixel can automatically adjust the light temperature during rain and fog for better visibility, while special “lighting carpet” effects follow road curves and improve visibility while driving.

There are also special light signals for communicating with pedestrians and other drivers without the need for classic sound warnings. Huawei has confirmed that the full RGB version of the XPixel system will first arrive in the future version of the Aito M9 electric SUV model that the company has been developing together with partners since 2023.

Unlike Western manufacturers who very cautiously introduce adaptive driving beam technology due to regulatory restrictions, Chinese companies are currently very aggressively pushing the development of headlights that become part of the car’s infotainment and AI systems. Huawei is practically trying to turn headlights from an ordinary safety element into a completely new interactive vehicle platform, reports New Atlas.
