Valve has confirmed that it will stop selling physical Steam gift cards in retail stores. The information is posted on the official support page, and the cards will only remain available until the current stock is sold out. After that, physical Steam cards will no longer be part of the offer.
The main reason for this decision is fraud. Valve says that the problem has not been effectively stopped, although the company has taken several protective measures over the past years. Scammers often used physical Steam gift cards as an easy way to extort money from victims.
Steam gift cards disappear from sale
The most common fraud scenario was very simple. The victim would be tricked into going to a store and buy a Steam gift card, then the scammers would ask for an activation code under various pretexts. Once they receive the code, they can immediately take the amount from the card and transfer it to their Steam account, while refunds for damaged users are very difficult.
Valve previously tried to limit such abuses through cooperation with the relevant services, warnings on the cards themselves, as well as restrictions on sales by location and quantity. However, the company admits that fraudsters constantly changed their methods, so the problem could not be solved permanently.
Steam physical gift cards have been on sale since 2012, which means they’ve been on the market for about 14 years. Valve expects that existing in-store inventory will be sold out by the end of 2026, after which the physical cards will officially disappear from retail.
Users who have already purchased physical Steam Gift Cards need not worry. They will not cease to be valid and will be able to be used normally even after the cancellation of the sale. Therefore, the change applies only to new physical cards in stores, not to already purchased codes.
Digital Steam gift cards remain on sale and will not be affected by this decision. This means that users will still be able to top up their Steam Wallet to friends or send a gift card online, just without a physical card as an intermediary.
Valve’s decision shows how risky gift cards have become as a channel for fraud. Although practical as a gift, physical cards with a one-time code allowed fraudsters to transfer value quickly and with difficulty. That’s why Steam isn’t doing away with gift cards as a concept, just their physical form.
