The City of Zagreb has officially announced a project tender for the conceptual technical-design solution of the bridge over the Sava River in the corridor of the extended Vrapčanska Street, better known as Jarunski Most. This infrastructure project will significantly contribute to the future vision of the capital city and represents the first bridge to be built in the western part of Zagreb after as many as 45 years, the City announced. At the same time, it is only the third bridge in Zagreb that will have an integrated tram line.
Traffic relief
According to the mayor’s statement Tomislav Tomaševićthe Jarun bridge has been defined as one of the most important development projects of the City of Zagreb in the coming years. He pointed out that the implementation of this project will relieve traffic in the west of the city, establish a new tram connection between Trešnjevka and Novi Zagreb, better connect large city districts and open up new opportunities for the development of the area along the Sava River.
The new bridge will be 625 meters long and 38 meters wide, and the planned structure includes four traffic lanes, a tramway, bicycling infrastructure and pedestrian corridors. The main traffic goal of the construction is the relief of the Adriatic bridge and key traffic routes at the western entrance to the city, primarily Zagrebačka avenue, Horvaćanska and Savska cesta, as well as the Remitenec roundabout. In addition, the bridge will provide significantly better access to the future National Children’s Hospital and University Hospital in Blato.

For the purposes of conducting the competition, a jury consisting of ten experts from the fields of construction, transport, architecture and urban planning was recently appointed. Their task is to choose a solution that, in addition to the necessary functionality and traffic efficiency, will provide Zagreb with a new, aesthetically recognizable symbol of the city.
Works over two years
The maximum estimated value of the new bridge is 140 million euros without VAT, with the note that the judging panel has the option to choose a solution whose economic value would be significantly lower. When it comes to administrative prerequisites, the property-legal relations for the bridge itself have been fully resolved, while expropriation procedures and other legally prescribed legal procedures are currently underway for the remaining part of the route of the extended Vrapčanska Street.
After the end of the tender, a contract will be concluded with the author of the selected conceptual solution, through the negotiation process of public procurement, for the creation of the conceptual project necessary for obtaining the location permit. According to the official plan and the current dynamics of documentation preparation, the start of construction works on the ground is expected in the middle of 2028.
