Destiny 2 almost lived on under the name Destiny Infinity

As Destiny 2 slowly turns off the lights, details are emerging about internal ideas that could change the fate of the popular shooter.

Bungie has confirmed that content updates for Destiny 2 will stop in June, with Destiny 3 still missing. However, according to several anonymous sources within the studio, the matter did not have to end this way.

One of the ideas that was considered was soft reboot pod nazivom “Destiny Infinity”. The plan included abandoning the newly introduced model of two minor expansions per year and returning to one, large and much more deliberate expansion per year.

Unfortunately, after Bungie concluded the great Light and Darkness saga with the almost masterful expansion The Final Shape, the extreme decrease in the number of active players with the next expansion Edge of Fate was not enough to justify such a large investment – especially when Marathon it didn’t even come close to meeting expectations.

According to the same sources, if Marathon had been financially successful, the above scenario would probably have happened, but the question is how successful it would have been. Neither the name of the rebranded Destiny, nor the layoffs, nor the creative drought at Bungie inspire significant confidence.
