Iron Maiden – The Writing On The Wall Lyrics

The band Iron Maiden, after a six-year break, released the single ‘The Writing on the Wall’, which represents the first new material after the band’s last studio album from 2015, “The Book of Souls”.

The new song was written by frontman Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrien Smith, it was produced by Kevin Shirley, and bassist Steve Harris also contributed as an assistant producer of the song, it is stated in the announcement.

Back in October last year, Dickinson said that the Maidens had returned to the studio. Then he touched on how much the pandemic disrupted their musical plans and tours. Fortunately, those circumstances did not extinguish their will to create and record new music.

The inspiration for the song is taken from the biblical Old Testament book of Daniel about the feast of the Babylonian prince Belshazzar, on which a mysterious hand wrote on the wall. The song itself does not refer to this biblical story, but Dickinson used it for his narrative, which is shown in the video for the song, which can be treated as an epic short film.

Iron Maiden – The Writing On The Wall Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to The Writing On The Wall by Iron Maiden from the latest album titled “Senjutsu”.

Across a painted desert lies a train of vagabonds
All that’s left of what we were it’s what we have become
Once our empires glorious but now the empire’s gone
The dead gave us the time to live and now our time is done

Now we are victorious, we’ve become our slaves
A land of hope and glory building graveyards for the brave

Have you seen the writing on the wall?
Have you seen that writing?
Can you see the riders on the storm?
Can you see them riding?
Can you see them riding?

Holding on to fury is that all we ever know
Ignorance our judge and jury all we’ve got to show
From Hollywood to Babylon ~ holy war to kingdom come
On a trail of dust and ashes ~ when the burning sky is done
A tide of change is coming and that is what you fear
The earthquake is coming but you don’t want to hear
You’re just too blind to see

Have you seen the writing on the wall?
Have you seen that writing?
Can you see the riders on the storm?
Can you see them riding?
Can you see them riding, riding next to you?

Have you seen the writing on the wall?
Have you seen that writing?
Can you see the riders on the storm?
Can you see them riding?

Have you seen the writing on the wall?
Have you seen that writing?
Can you see the riders on the storm?
Can you see them riding?
Can you see them riding, riding next to you?
