Volkswagen announced a significant undertaking in its electrification strategy – namely, they delivered two million fully electric vehicles under the brand. The jubilee model, model ID.3 produced at the Zwickau factory, was ceremoniously handed over to the new owner in Dresden. The sales result of two million electric cars encompasses the entire journey of the brand, which began in 2013 with the launch of the e-up! model, and continued with the systematic expansion of the offer to today’s ID. family and earlier models like e-Golf.
New model announcements
Martin Sandermember of the Volkswagen Management Board for sales, marketing and after-sales, pointed out that the company laid the foundations for the transformation towards a fully electric future early on. According to him, the strong market position, especially in Germany and Europe, is a direct confirmation of the competitiveness and attractiveness of their electric solutions, thus positioning Volkswagen among the world’s largest manufacturers in this segment.
Three models played a crucial role in achieving this record. Leading the way is the ID.4 with approximately 901,000 units delivered, which is a key driver of growth in global markets such as China and the US. It is followed by the ID.3, the first model built on the Modular Electric Platform (MEB), with 628,000 deliveries, while the latest addition to the upper mid-range segment, the ID.7 model, has already reached 132,000 deliveries in sedan and wagon versions.
The brand strategy is aimed at further increasing the availability of electric mobility. In this context, ID was announced. Polo, the first of four new electric cars to be launched by the end of 2026 in the segment of small and compact vehicles. The goal is to introduce affordable and practical vehicles for everyday use in high-volume segments, which should drive the company’s next phase of growth.
But for comparison, we have to put the two million electric Volkswagens into context. BYD, currently the world’s largest manufacturer of electric cars, sold 2.26 million units last year alone, and Tesla, whose sales are in decline, recorded an annual result of about 1.6 million electric cars.
