Volkswagen’s high-performance division, Volkswagen R, has officially announced its return to the legendary Nürburgring circuit. The company plans to participate in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in 2027, which will also be the year in which the brand celebrates its 25th anniversary. This decision marks an important milestone for the department, which has honed its technological solutions for years precisely on this German track.
The return to the Nordschleife, also known as the “Green Hell”, will serve as a platform to demonstrate the strength and innovation of the R brand. The management of the department points out that this track has always been key to the development of their models, providing the extreme conditions necessary to test the endurance and dynamics of vehicles bearing the R designation.

The planned appearance in 2027 will be the centerpiece of the celebration of a quarter of a century of existence of Volkswagen’s sports division. Throughout history, the R brand has positioned itself as the pinnacle of Volkswagen’s offering, focusing on performance, four-wheel drive and an emotional driving experience. Participation in the endurance race is considered a logical continuation of that tradition and a way to celebrate past successes.
Although the details of the specific model that will compete (shown in the first pictures as a “spiked” Golf R) have not yet been fully revealed, it is emphasized that the vehicle will be adapted to the strict requirements of the competition at the Nürburgring. Engineers are already working on optimizing technologies that should ensure competitiveness in one of the most prestigious and difficult races in the world, where vehicles face changing weather conditions and demanding track topography.
It is expected that the project will attract a lot of attention from fans of motoring and especially that brand all over the world. Volkswagen R plans to use the period leading up to the race for intensive preparation and testing, to ensure that their anniversary performance lives up to the brand’s reputation among high-performance sports car enthusiasts.
