Apple Music does not currently offer a free mode, but this may change in the future. As competition in the music streaming market grows stronger, Apple could consider a lower subscription tier or even some kind of free model.
New clues have surfaced in a test version of the Apple Music app for Android. Tipster Aaron Perris announced on the X Network that the developers found several interesting text strings in the code, including “Can’t skip any more tracks” and “Premium access required”. Such messages immediately sparked speculation that Apple is preparing more limited access to the service, with a charge for more advanced features.
The free Apple Music version raises a big question
If these assumptions prove correct, Apple Music could get a model more similar to competing services, where non-subscription users would have certain restrictions. This could include fewer song skips, less playback control, or locked features only available to Premium users.
Another possibility is the introduction of multiple subscription levels. Apple could thus offer a cheaper version with basic functions, while the more expensive package would retain full control, better sound quality and other benefits. However, for now there is no official confirmation that the company is really going in that direction.
It is important to emphasize that even Aaron Perris does not claim that the found strings necessarily mean the arrival of a free or cheaper Apple Music plan. They may also be related to other features that Apple is testing in the application, so the whole story should be seen as an early signal, and not as an announcement of the finished product.
Until now, Apple has been very reticent about the free music model. Oliver Schusser, one of the executives of the Apple Music service, previously told Bloomberg that the free model is a bad idea and that Apple Music is the only major music streaming service without a free plan, which the company is proud of. Therefore, the arrival of a free Apple Music version would represent a serious change in strategy.
