Samsung delivered the first LPDDR6X samples to Qualcomm

Although LPDDR6 memory has not yet officially entered commercial use, its improved LPDDR6X variant has already appeared on the development maps of industry leaders in this field. According to the latest information from the supply chain, Samsung has completed the key development phase of LPDDR6 memory and plans to start commercial deployment in the second half of 2026.

The initial speed of the standard LPDDR6 memory is 10.7 Gbps, and thanks to the new system of dynamic energy consumption management, the energy efficiency has been improved by about 21 percent compared to the LPDDR5 generation. As the technology matures further, the target operating speed should increase to 14.4 Gbps, pushing the boundaries of mobile DRAM memory.

LPDDR6X becomes the new reference for mobile AI

LPDDR6X goes a step further and further increases data bandwidth and reduces latency. Although JEDEC has not yet finalized the official technical specifications for LPDDR6X, more details about the standard are expected to be released later this year.

It is particularly significant that Samsung has already delivered the first LPDDR6X samples to Qualcomm for testing. Although HBM memory is currently preferred in top AI accelerators, it requires significantly more complex packaging, more expensive validation and more complicated testing compared to the classic DDR architecture.

LPDDR memories, unlike HBM solutions, do not require complex 3D stacking of chips, which gives them a clear advantage in terms of costs. This is exactly why LPDDR6X is a very attractive option for edge AI and energy-efficient systems. Qualcomm is reportedly considering this memory for the AI250 chip, as it offers a good balance between consumption, performance and price.

According to current estimates, LPDDR6X is still not close to mass production. If the development cycle continues with the planned dynamics, the official commercial standard and wider application can only be expected during the second half of 2027.
