The largest and longest crowdfunding project in gaming, Star Citizen set a new record by raising $1 billion from players.
It also happened – Star Citizen has collected more than a billion US dollars. That money came not in the form of business investments but from the players themselves – through the sale of pledges and virtual content for that space simulation, a good part of which is still not available even though the game has been in development for more than 14 years.
Some say that Star Citizen is one of the biggest scams in modern gaming. Still others believe in the vision of Cloud Imperium Games and are willing to invest money in a game that is conceptually more complex than anything currently available on the market.
And for this latter audience, the development studio Cloud Imperium Games regularly serves up new promises at insane prices. The latest one is called Anvil Odin – and we are talking about a big ship that it costs $5,000. It’s not finished yet and customers won’t get it right away when they pay for it. But that’s not even the most bizarre thing in the whole story…
You see, that ship can only be purchased by Star Citizen players who are part of the Odin Founders Club. And in order to enter that exclusive club, players must register they must submit a written essay in which they explain why they are worthy of steering that shipwhich doesn’t even exist yet. Just like the launch date of version 1.0 of Star Citizen.
Basically, Star Citizen will be in development until further notice, and it can be tried for free until the 27th of this month. Director Chris Roberts tells it like it is the single-player component of the game, called Squadron 42, is in the final stages of development. Admittedly, he said that last year, and maybe the year before that.
