The popular platform for communicating with gamers, Discord, introduces an unpopular system of determining the user’s age by scanning a face or personal document. Is that a reason for you to leave that platform if you use it?
The last time Discord was the subject of our survey, more than 50% of you said you used the platform to communicate with gamers. Maybe that number has increased in the meantime, and maybe it will decrease in the future.
Namely, from next month, Discord is introducing a new system for determining the age of users. If the user does not verify his/her legal age, some features of Discord will be unavailable to him/her (more on this in a separate article). And the two ways to confirm age will be scanning the face with a camera or taking a photo of an ID card. Both controversial in their own way.
Although Discord says that they will not use your face to train an AI model, nor will they store your personal documents on a server, these are all explanations we have heard before. And not even half a year has passed since the personal information of some 70,000 Discord users in Australia was stolen in a security breach. In addition, it does not inspire confidence that Discord ties up with partner companies for these jobs that have links to some controversial and dubious people, such as the late Jeffrey Epstein.
The reactions of Discord users to the announcement of the introduction of this system were not at all positive. Many are already looking for alternatives to that platform and are announcing a boycott. However, there are those who are of the opinion that this does not change anything for them – so if they are already showing their face in video calls on Discord, then what is this one-time face scan for age verification?
