Geely’s new electric car broke two Guinness World Records

China’s Geely recently announced the Galaxy TT electric sedan, making it clear that it is aiming directly at one of the most popular competitors in the domestic market, the Xiaomi SU7. Now, the technical details behind all this have finally been revealed, and at the center of it all is the powertrain developed in cooperation with the company InfiMotion, one of Geely’s key partners for electric drive technology.

Intelligent drive 16-in-1

Namely, Geely calls this system its intelligent electric drive 16-in-1, and it is also known by the commercial name “Thunder”. It is an approach that integrates a whole series of key hardware components into one extremely compact unit weighing only 75 kilograms. The electric motor, DC-DC converter, on-board charger (OBC), vehicle control unit (VCU), engine controller and high-voltage battery management system (BMS) are located inside the housing, made of light and strong magnesium. With such deep integration, more than 180 redundant parts have been eliminated and the amount of wiring has been significantly reduced, which further contributes to lower mass and greater efficiency.

Thanks to the incredibly low weight of the unit, electrical losses are reduced to a minimum. Geely claims that the system showed an efficiency rate of as much as 93.8 percent in tests. Although this figure is based on the Chinese CLTC measurement cycle, which is known to be quite optimistic, it is still one of the most efficient electric drives in the world.

Guinness World Records and actual consumption

What does all this mean for future owners? Geely conducted an efficiency test driving around China’s Qinghai Lake, where the Galaxy TT achieved an average consumption of just 8.2 kWh/100 km. With this, he set the Guinness world record for the lowest energy consumption of a serial electric limousine on a circular route around the aforementioned lake. This efficiency allows Geely to achieve a long range without the need to install huge and heavy battery packs.

The Galaxy TT will be offered with three battery options supplied by CATL. The entry-level model will have a battery with a capacity of 52.4 kWh, the mid-range version will come with a 63.8 kWh package, while the most equipped model will use a 75.2 kWh battery. All three packages work on an 800-volt electric architecture that enables fast charging, and the range of the vehicle with the largest battery will extend to an impressive 725 kilometers (CLTC). For a vehicle of this size, the listed battery capacities are relatively modest, which only confirms how efficiency is a key component of Geely’s strategy.

Performance and advanced management

Geely has not yet released full details on the powertrains for the entire range, but has confirmed that the twin-engine, all-wheel drive version will develop up to 425kW of power. This will enable the Galaxy TT to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. The system also relies on AI-assisted torque management, which ensures quicker responses and more precise power delivery. Optimum performance at high loads is ensured by a 54-channel directional cooling system, which can reduce the peak engine temperature by as much as 15°C.

To further prove the capabilities of its new drivetrain, the Galaxy TT won the second Guinness World Record, for the longest continuous drift of two electric vehicles on a wet surface. The cars covered more than 46 kilometers in synchronized drift. The purpose of this demonstration was to demonstrate the speed of torque response, the efficiency of thermal management and the consistency of performance under long-term high load conditions.
