Huawei is reportedly preparing a new generation of triple-folding phone Mate XT2, with a completely different construction compared to the previous model. According to information from Chinese blogger Digital Chat Station, the device should leave the “S” folding shape and switch to a new “U” configuration.
The most important change relates to the position of the screen and the way it is folded. The Mate XT2 should get a separate external screen on the right side of the case, while the phone would fold first on the right and then on the left.
Unlike the previous Mate XT model, where part of the flexible panel remained on the outside, the new U design should allow both side parts to fold inwards. This would keep all the flexible panels protected inside the case when the phone is folded.
Huawei Mate XT2 hides all flexible screens inside the case
Such a construction could reduce the risk of scratches and damage in the event of a fall, as the sensitive surface of the main screen would no longer be directly exposed to external objects. However, claims of significantly higher resistance have not yet been confirmed by independent tests.
The Mate XT2 would also differ from the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold model. With the Samsung solution, the camera module is on the left side, and the external screen is in the middle part of the case. The phone folds first from the left and then from the right.
Huawei reportedly chooses the opposite logic. The outer screen will be on the right side, so the user will first fold that part, and then close the left segment over it. The result should be a U shape where the main flexible screen is completely hidden.
A separate external screen would allow daily tasks to be performed without opening the large internal panel. Calls, answering messages, displaying codes and briefly checking notifications could be done directly on the folded device.
According to the same information, Huawei is also working to reduce the visibility of the folds, as well as to further reduce the overall thickness of the device. These are the two areas where triple-fold phones still have the biggest design challenges.
The source claims that the Mate XT2 could be the most complete triple-folding flagship on the market. However, since Huawei has not yet officially confirmed the device’s design, folding mechanism, or dimensions, these details should be seen as early unofficial information for now.
