While PlayStation and Nintendo devices have switched exclusively to built-in lithium-ion batteries for generations, Microsoft still ships Xbox controllers with classic AA batteries. Even the brand new Xbox Series X comes with two regular AA batteries in the box. Although it seems like a saving measure, the reason is actually simpler and comes from the players themselves.
Jason Ronald, director of development at the Xbox team, revealed in a conversation with Digital Foundry that there is a very strong segment of the audience that wants to keep AA batteries.
Xbox stays with AA batteries – because that’s what users want
According to him, the most important thing is to offer flexibility: those who want a rechargeable battery can buy it, and those who prefer AA batteries can use them without restrictions.
Microsoft offers a special Rechargeable Battery Pack option, while the controller behaves the same as the Elite series, except that the battery is separate.
Battery drain can be significant, depending on how much you play. Therefore, users of Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles can opt for several practical alternatives.
ShutterstockOne option is to use rechargeable AA batteries and a separate charger. Microsoft also sells its own Rechargeable Battery pack that charges via a USB-C cable. It provides about 30 hours of playing time and charges in about 4 hours, and can be played while charging if the cable is long enough.
Another option is the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, which has a built-in rechargeable battery with an autonomy of up to 40 hours, as well as advanced features such as interchangeable analog sticks, additional buttons and support for three custom profiles. The price is high, but the experience is significantly more comfortable.
Why Microsoft probably won’t ditch AA batteries anytime soon
At a time when the prices of consoles, accessories and games are constantly rising, Microsoft is maintaining an approach that many consider practical: standard controllers remain compatible with the cheapest, most available power source that has existed for decades.
AA batteries are not subject to sudden price increases, they are always available, and at the same time they offer users a choice: whether they want a simple battery replacement or a long-term rechargeable solution.
Xbox thus maintains flexibility as part of its philosophy, while PlayStation offers a unique but less flexible solution with built-in batteries.
Regardless of the choice, Xbox is still considered a powerful console, and users can customize their experience as they wish, even when it comes to something as simple as powering the controller, writes BGR.
