Another smartphone brand is leaving us, two operating systems are shutting down

Major restructuring within related technology brands OPPO, OnePlus i realme reach a radical epilogue, transforming these companies beyond recognition. According to the claims of the well-informed insiderthe OxygenOS and realme UI software platforms will be completely shut down and integrated into OPPO ColorOS.

Additionally, current moves on the ground point to a massive and coordinated withdrawal of the OnePlus brand from Western markets.

Software consolidation: Three brands under one roof

The complete abolition of separate operating systems represents the logical end of the process that was started in 2021. It was then that the connection of the software teams of OnePlus and OPPO was announced. Realme is now joining the initiative, which means that the three brands will share identical software through the ColorOS platform in the future.

The main goal of this move is to drastically reduce the huge costs of research and development (R&D). However, this decision brings much deeper changes than the budget optimization itself, because it directly erases the visual and functional identity by which OnePlus has been recognizable among users for years.

Quiet withdrawal from Europe and America

Evidence of the shutdown of regional branches of the OnePlus brand is becoming increasingly apparent across Europe and the United States. On the official online store of this company in the United Kingdom, practically all key devices are clear outand the stocks are not replenished.

This shortage includes:

  • The latest smartphones OnePlus 15 i OnePlus 15R,
  • Current tablets Pad 3 i Pad Go 2,
  • The complete line of OnePlus Watch smart watches and accompanying headphones.

The remaining stock can still be found at some external sellers such as the British Amazon, but this is only a sale of the remaining inventory.

A similar and equally unfavorable scenario is taking place in the market of the United States of America. The major retail chain BestBuy has completely removed OnePlus devices from its offer, while Amazon offers minimal stocks of the OnePlus 15 and 15R models, mostly in just one color and one memory configuration. Meanwhile, OnePlus in Germany and the rest of continental Europe is openly diverting its potential customers to OPPO-branded devices. This clearly signals that the parent group no longer sees the purpose of maintaining a brand that has never crossed the 1% market share mark in the US.

It is rumored that realme will suffer the same fate, which will similarly withdraw from the largest number of current markets. And realme could only remain in some markets, which the company will consider to be worth further investment.

New division of the map: Strict geographical division of the territory

The new global strategy implies a strict division of territories between related brands in order to avoid mutual competition in a reduced global market. In the future, OnePlus will focus exclusively on the markets of India and China, where its fate will remain tied to OPPO’s resources. How deep this integration is is shown by the fact that complete after-sales support and service for OnePlus users in India has already been officially taken over by Oppo.

While OnePlus is retreating to Asia, realme is completely leaving the Chinese market and redirecting capacities to individual international markets.

The only point on the world map where the OnePlus and Realme brand offerings will continue to overlap directly will be India. In all other territories, their presence will be divided. In practice, this means that the OnePlus brand, in the form in which it was known to the Western world, ceases to exist.
