As things currently stand, the current generations of PlayStation and Xbox consoles will be around for a few more years, as the next ones could be delayed due to memory shortages.
It has been estimated and predicted that the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox-PC will be launched sometime in 2027. However, all of that is now up in the air after a sudden memory grab ensued.
In the midst of this predicament, which occurred at the end of 2025, memory manufacturers began to turn en masse to the lucrative clientele of AI centers, which led to a shortage of memory for practically everything that is not related to the needs of artificial intelligence. The shortage has, of course, resulted in higher prices for hardware at retail, and it does not bode well for future consumer gaming devices.
It is quite likely that the lack of memory will negatively affect almost all segments of high-end gaming, and the team from Insider Gaming reports that they have heard that Sony and Microsoft are preparing for a potential shift in plans as for future consoles.
If memory prices continue to run amok, we may be yet to see the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles at the end of 2028 or maybe even 2029. No one can predict it with certainty at the moment, but as things stand now, the situation does not look optimistic for gaming.
