Absolute shock: PlayStation games will no longer be released on discs from 2028

Sony has announced that PlayStation will primarily become a digital platform from 2028 and that new games will no longer be launched on Blu-ray discs or in physical form.

Last week, many were shocked by the news that GTA 6 in physical form will actually be a piece of paper with a code to activate the digital edition. And now here is even more shocking news, which, frankly speaking, we did not hope for.

Sony has just announced that from the beginning of 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be produced on discs. In translation, all future games for PlayStation consoles from 2028 will be exclusively digital.

Sony says that this is “a natural way of adapting to consumer trends” and that digital games are already outselling physical disc sales (the ratio of digital to physical games on PlayStation was recently 80:20).

This news comes at a time after Sony has come under fire from fans for announcing that customers will be withdrawing purchased films and series from the French Studio Canal in digital form.

Now the only question is how long it will take for them to repent of this and decide to trample on this decision.

If the decision remains, it can be expected that the PlayStation 6 will be the first console without a disc reader. However, it looks like that reader could be available as an extra cost option for those users who have a collection of older games on disc.
