Why the Apple iPhone Fold could deal a painful blow to the competition

The first bendable iPhone arrives as Apple’s entry into the segment of bendable devices, but not in the form of a classic phone that turns into a tablet, but as a tablet that folds into a compact format. This concept differentiates the device from the competition and is an attempt to combine portability and productivity.

When folded, the device is 120.6mm tall and 83.8mm wide, with a 9:13 aspect ratio and a 5.49-inch external display. It is intended for quick handling, viewing of messages and notifications. When opened, the 7.7-inch main screen appears, optimized for multitasking, video content and applications that require a larger desktop. All of this resembles the approach of the iPad mini device, which makes it easier for users who have already worked with or own one of the devices from the Apple ecosystem to switch.

Tablet access as a key advantage

The ultra-thin case is only 4.8 mm thick when the device is open and the integration of the Touch ID sensor into the Power button further emphasizes the focus on practicality. The internal camera is placed below the screen, which enables a unique content display surface without a notch. The rear camera system belongs to the premium class and positions the device as a true flagship.

Apple’s decision to move DRAM from the top of the chipset to the side and use advanced packaging has resulted in more stable operation and better thermals, which is especially important for bendable devices.

The production process is challenging though. Parts like the complex hinge mechanism caused the delay as the premiere was originally planned for September 2026, and now there is more and more talk of moving it to 2027.

This approach targets users who need a device with a smaller format, but with the maximum functionality of a tablet. Therefore, the bendable iPhone can become an alternative to the iPad mini model, in an even more portable form. Combined with an advanced screen, even better multitasking capabilities and a focus on productivity and entertainment, Apple is trying to create a new category in which it will not compete directly with Samsung and Google phones, but offer something different.

If production issues are resolved in time, this device could set new expectations in the world of bendable technology and bring Apple dominance in a segment that is just becoming mass-accepted, writes Geeky Gadgets.
